Building Opportunities and Skills Seminars (BOSS Day)
Aims & Objectives
- To raise student awareness of the recruitment processes and the world of work
- To offer experience of a whole job application process
- To help students prepare effectively for interviews
- To help students develop their communication and inter-personal skills in the context of work
Description of Activity
At a BOSS day we bring volunteer facilitators from businesses into the classroom
to teach pupils about professional life.
The one-day programme is divided into 3 seminars. In the first seminar pupils
get the chance to interview their facilitators about their career, professional
life, the company they work for, education and training. It focuses on what
employers might/will expect from future employees. In the second seminar pupils
look at the differences between CVs, personal statements, application forms
and references and practise writing their own. The third seminar is dedicated
to interview skills and pupils get the opportunity to practise being interviewed
and being assessed. Before and in between these seminars there are comical
theatre performances that provide an entertaining starting point for the seminars.
During the seminars, a teacher will be present at all times so the facilitators
will be able to concentrate fully on delivering the seminars. There is an extensive
BOSS-pack to guide the facilitator through the programme without the need for
much preparation. It provides the facilitator with a timeframe for the day
but also allows for the facilitator to choose from different assignments to
personalise the programme.
What we Need
For the BOSS day we are always looking for volunteers from the world of work who are willing to spend a school day to help students to be better prepared for professional life and to give them first-hand experience of what a business involves.
