Mentoring

Aims & Objectives

Mentoring is now widely and successfully used to support the development of students and contribute to school improvement. Successful mentoring can help prevent student drop out, support improvement in academic performance, help in the development of key skills, raise self-esteem and widen horizons, as well as providing an invaluable insight into the world of work. Our experience has shown that mentoring works particularly well with self-selecting students from focused groups aged 14/15.

Description of Activity

Over a period of 9 to 12 months, mentors help out mentees with all kinds of work related and educational issues. Mentors are matched with students, aged 14/15, on a one-to-one basis. Mentors can help their students by listening, discussing relevant issues, helping with planning, exploring problems, etc.

Ideally there is a match of mentors of the same company with mentees of one school. Typically there are four face-to-face group meetings during one year
and in between these the mentee and the mentor will communicate by email. NEBP offers a secure, monitored e-mentoring environment to ensure that
all e-mail contact is easy and safe.
