Description of Activity
The Primary Reading Programme is one of the most successful programmes run by NEBP. Volunteers are recruited from a variety of businesses, public organisations and members of the community. The programme aims to raise educational standards in Newham by helping primary school children with their reading.
Volunteers can choose a participating primary school in Newham for one hour per week over a ten week period. The volunteer is allocated four children for whom he/she acts as a reading partner. During the hour the reading partner spends time with each pupil, engaging the pupil in one-to-one reading and discussing books.
The programme aims to develop a special relationship between adult and child to improve the child’s reading while also broadening their horizons. Not only the children benefit from one-to-one tuition, it also provides volunteers with a great sense of achievement whilst helping young people
