Breaking down the goal

Building bridges

Worksheet b

Brief: to build some beam bridges, using only one sheet of A4 paper for each bridge. You can use different designs for the beams.

  • Observing - which bridges support the least/most weight
  • Variables - the different designs for the beams
  • Drawing conclusions - deciding which design is the strongest
  • Planning - making the experiment a fair test by using A4 size paper for each bridge spanning the same distance with each bridge
  • Measuring - the load which each bridge supports before collapsing
  • Evaluating - deciding how the experiment could be improved next time. Was the method satisfactory?
  • Communicating the result - recording what happened (in the form of a table)
  • Hypothesising - predicting which design of beam will support the greatest mass

Arrange the above statements in the order in which you think they should be done.
