Learning and Reading Volunteers
Aims & Objectives
- To raise educational standards
- To improve reading ability of the pupils
- To engage pupils in reading
- To help pupils broaden their horizons
Description of Activity
The Volunteer Assisted Reading Programme is one of the most successful programmes
run by the NEBP. Volunteers are recruited from a variety of businesses and
public organisations. The program aims to raise educational standards in Newham
by helping Primary School children with their reading.
Volunteers visit a Primary school in Newham (of their choice) for one hour
per week over a ten week period. The volunteer is allocated four children for
whom he/she acts as a reading partner. During the hour the reading partner
spends time with each pupil, engaging the pupil in one-to-one reading and discussing
books.
The programme aims to develop a special relationship between adult and child
to improve the child’s reading while also broadening their horizons.
Not only the children benefit from one-to-one tuition, it also provides volunteers
with a great sense of achievement while providing a great experience of helping
young people.
What we Need
For the Volunteer Assisted Reading Programme the NEBP is looking for people from all kind of backgrounds, business or otherwise, who want to make a difference. The NEBP will provide training and background checks for volunteers.
