London City Airport (LCA) opened in 1987. Although built as part of the redevelopment of the Isle of Dogs and the Docklands, the Airport was the first major regeneration project in Newham and its effect on the borough has been considerable.
With over 1.5 million passengers a year using LCA, 10 airlines serving 20 European cities, the Airport has brought many new people into Newham. In turn they have seen the potential and opportunity that Newham as an area presents. The Airport is a successful and firmly established part of Newham. A measure of that success is the proposals to more than double the capacity of the airport to four million passengers by 2010 through the construction of an aircraft holding area on stilts on the water. LCA has been a beacon for the area, showing the way for a whole host of projects and developments and proving that such large-scale projects have a future in Newham.
The Airport reinforces Newham’s position as the transport hub of East London. Though currently only a short bus ride from Canning Town Tube Station, by 2005 LCA will have its own Docklands Light Railway extension, connecting it directly to Stratford and the City.
LCA employs around 1250 people, a third of which come from the local area. LCA is also in the process of developing training programmes to enable more local people to enter the airline industry.
