Thames Gateway Bridge

Thames Gateway BridgeThames Gateway BridgeBack to top

With the Woolwich Ferry the only method of crossing the Thames by vehicle East of Blackwall Tunnel until you reach Dartford, there has long been a need for another river crossing.

Plans are now being made to build a bridge connecting the A13 at Gallions Reach in Beckton to the A2016 Eastern and Western Way at Thamesmead on the south side of the river. With a consultation in 2003 showing widespread local support for the Bridge, things are moving forward. It is hoped that the bridge will be built and open by 2013.

It is estimated that the Bridge would create between 18,000 - 26,000 new jobs in the region, as well as cutting journey times greatly between North-East and South-East London.
