Building Opportunities and Skills Seminars (BOSS Day)
Aims & Objectives
- To raise student awareness of the recruitment process and the world of
work - To offer experience of the whole job application process
- To help students prepare effectively for interviews
- To help students develop their communication and inter-personal skills
in the context of work
Description of Activity
Delivery is through three fully resourced seminars led by volunteer facilitators
from a variety of businesses, interspersed with forum theatre performances,
which raise relevant issues and provide an entertaining starting point for
the learning in the seminars. In the first session students get a chance to
interview real employers about their careers, professional life, education
and training, and to discuss what employers are looking for from their potential
employees. In the second seminar students understand the differences between
CVs, personal statements, application forms and references, and develop their
own skills in writing these. The third seminar is dedicated to interview skills
and students get the opportunity to practise being interviewed by a real employer
and to be assessed and advised by both the facilitator and their classmates.
